Laser Treatments: What to Expect
Preparing for Treatment
A pre-laser skin care regimen may be recommended for some treatments to prepare the skin and to optimize results.
Laser Treatment Experience
While each laser is different, in general, when you arrive for your appointment your provider will apply a topical anesthetic to the treatment area. Then using a handheld device, your provider will direct the laser energy at your skin according to a predetermined treatment plan and a zimmer chiller may be employed for some treatments to spray cold air on the treatment site to improve patient comfort. Once the treatment is finished, a cooling balm and SPF will be applied to soothe and protect the skin for the rest of the day.
Recovery After Laser
Recovery following a laser treatment can vary depending on the specific laser and whether the procedure was ablative or non-ablative. Ablative or partially ablative laser treatments require more downtime as the skin will need roughly one week to recover from mild swelling and the sensation of a moderate sunburn. Non-ablative laser treatments typically require no downtime, and most patients are able to resume normal activities directly following treatment.
Laser Treatment Results
Following a laser treatment, or a series of laser treatments, it’s common for patients to see visible skin tightening, a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, and a dramatically clearer and more radiant complexion. Results will typically continue to improve over the course of 3 to 6 months following the treatment. To maintain results, we recommend every patient adhere to a strict skin care routine that includes a medical grade SPF following any laser treatment to both protect the skin and ensure long-lasting results.
